Summary/Abstract: The specificity of the needs of the elderly, as well as the different character of problems related to their existence in society, points to the necessity to adjust social services to that age group. On the one hand, the recently created profession of carer for the elderly is a response to such needs, but on the other it gives rise to the question of whether there is any need for new occupations in the social welfare area. Is the social worker alone not enough? The carer for the elderly works on a similar plane as the social worker, and both professions have the same addressee. Providing broadly-understood support for the senior citizen is their job. Even at this level there are a number of questions and issues related, for example, to how the competencies attributed to these professional roles differ. The article’s goal is to analyse common areas in the two professions as well as to specify the differences between them. The analysis is set in the context of issues such as the needs of the elderly and caring problems connected with supporting senior citizens.
