Summary/Abstract: Trade was the basic economic activity of Kovin on the lower Danube. Its intensive development began in the late 14th century and continued through the 15th century. It was based on a series of privileges granted to Kovin by the Hungarian kings, beginning with King Sigismund. Kovin received the broadest privileges in 1428, and they were confirmed on several occasions later. These privileges were also transferred to Upper Kovin, a new town founded on the lower Danube by the inhabitants of Kovin, who fled north from the Ottomans. This significant source provides highly important data on trade and the way of life on the southern border of Hungary. The purpose of the paper is to present the original content of the charter, according to Istvan Magdics’s edition from 1888, which is followed by Serbian translation.
