The Social and Economic Aspects of Astra’s Activity

Summary/Abstract: The activity of Astra is usually referred to as an important moment that decisively influenced the cultural and national life of the Romanians in Transylvania, the focus being on the educational aspects. Nevertheless, Astra also paid much attention to the process of the social and economic modernization of the Romanian society. The preoccupations for the social and economic aspects can be seen as a natural component of the general programme of this Association in its attempt to promote and support a national culture and civilisation. Astra organized popular lectures on economic issues of general interest and also published articles and studies related to this, all these with the help of some important banks of the time.
