Summary/Abstract: This paper includes comments about views of the period when the Book of Dede Korkut was written and mentions that it stands as a monument of oral transmission. It emphasizes that the art of poetry had significantly developed until the period when the Book of Dede Korkut was written down and it shows that characteristics of oral products still existed and were maintained at the stage when written products emerged. İmportant considerations are discussed based on historical factors. This study notes that the most important phenomena that shaped the world view of Turkic communities are poetry and the concept of being Oghuz. These phenomena are evaluated in terms of their contributions to general Turkish culture and their effects on the historical process are addressed. It points out that information about the Oghuz is found in oral and historical sources. Based on this information, the poetship in the Oghuz community is discussed. This study argues that the art of poetry is related to the life and livelihood of the Oghuz community and thus to the alp/khan period, and shows that the Book of Dede Korkut and the Oghuznama, which is also described as historical source, are functionally similar.
