Summary/Abstract: A thorough analysis of a film vs. the commercial pattern. Will artistic critique gain creative power in the future? It is a paradox that film critique has ceased to play an important role in Poland. A paradox because in democratic times this critique, similarly to Polish cinematography, has not managed to establish its own firm position. In general, film critics “represent the audience” and treat readers to a considerable amount of information whilst suppressing their own individual voice. But cinema, according to Tadeusz Sobolewski, Chief Editor of the Kino magazine from 1990 to1994, is an “internal myth”, a type of magic that affects the conscious and a “special private religion”. Consequently, the critic’s personal point of view combined with a thorough analysis of a film is very important. The role of artistic critique is to act as a barrier between the creator of a work and the viewer. Therefore, the critic’s position should be balanced and precise observations should be made. The prevailing schematic film reviews containing synopses of the plots with grading “stars” at the bottom do not enhance the readers’ knowledge and do not say anything to the directors. Nevertheless, Kino’s present Chief Editor, Andrzej Kołodyński, tells us that the magazine offers the opinions of critics to which there are strong reactions from both the readers as well as the film-making establishment. There is still a long road ahead for Polish artistic cinema if it wants to get closer to the multicoloured French and Italian cinematography. One of the obstacles faced is the constant lack of money. However, recent contests and festivals have shown us some signs of a revival. All the more for this, film critique must rediscover its creative power in order to have a positive impact on our film-making.
