Keywords: Empty architecture in times of consumerism
Summary/Abstract: Do townspeople have an eye for architectural subtleties? “Architecture is torn between space and time”. The old ambition of architecture to touch the absolute and to use space in order to challenge the power of time is now a thing of the past. Monumental edifices have been replaced by cheap constructions that resemble “prime time commercials” and that are “as empty as the commercials themselves”. This is the triumph of the age of the consumer in which “the old is the enemy of the new”. The value of the permanent has been overwhelmed by the never-ending digestion of it. Is it not the role of humans to give sense to space? Is space not dull, barren and cold without the human eye? The challenge of breathing spirit into the modern city landscape seems to still be alive; a spirit which turns positive vibrations and emotions into an enchanting reality among the noise of the city.
