Summary/Abstract: In a pandemic, that what was the foundation of the educational and research process—direct interpersonal contact—has become dangerous for us. The reformulation of academic education and its adaptation to the requirements of the virtual world is an unprecedented, difficult situation accompanied by fear and uncertainty. This task rested on the shoulders of academic teachers. The article deals with the issue related to building and creating a new work environment for research and teaching employees, the so-called virtual university. The challenges, opportunities and threats related to functioning in such an environment as well as the importance of digital competences in the work of an academic teacher in a virtual academic environment were indicated.
