Summary/Abstract: This article addresses a current problem of the investigation related to the use of electronic data in the investigation process. The investigation is necessitated by the lack of sufficient investigative practice and research on this issue, which complicates the work of investigative bodies and limits the scope of information that can be collected in criminal proceedings. The introduction discusses the concept of electronic evidence, as well as its relationship to the term computer data. From the point of view of the investigating authorities, the article indicates the main categories of objects - carriers of electronic data, which should be seized as material evidence in the investigation. The study briefly examines the two main procedural methods for extracting data from electronic devices - review of physical evidence and expertise, and made tactical recommendations for their implementation. The article identifies and analyzes the most typical categories of data contained in computer communication devices, examining their importance for establishing the circumstances of the case
