Summary/Abstract: This article addresses the development and enlightenment affiliation of the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, showing his links and differences with other philosophers. It also explores his polemics against the chief thinkers of postmodernism - here equated with neo-conservatism, which in turn sustains the heritage of an older conservatism, the heritage of scepticism towards enlightenment and its rationalist visions. The philosophy of Habermas is a serious attempt at a new philosophical synthesis which, instead of giving up in the face of the challenges with which historical dynamics confront us, offers a new way of confronting them. This is the path of self-reflexive enlightenment, an enlightenment conscious of its own flaws and limitations but which at the same time recognizes its obligations.
