Summary/Abstract: Currency is the result of continuous and often difficult development. Component of state sovereignty, the right to mint coinage underwent major transformations throughout history, not only in terms of economic outlook, but also as legal regulations and a form of manifestation of this right. Romania's EU integration on January 1, 2007 created the opportunity to claim new rights and the obligation to respect commitments made in the Accession Treaty and other official documents. European Monetary Union is not a goal that Romania would be able to focus their efforts on, but a functional structure in which Romania will fit once they have fulfilled all the criteria in this respect.
