Summary/Abstract: This study refers to the monument erected by public subscription by the inhabitants of Tulcea, in memory of Prince Mircea the Old. Mircea's monument was to be erected in parallel with the monument that wanted to remind the people of Tulcea of the important event of the re-annexation of Dobrogea to Romania after the War of Independence. The foundation stone ceremony took place on March 1, 1900, but due to the frequent political changes in the county, the official unveiling of the monument, set for 1901, seems to have taken place later. When the Germans occupied Dobrogea during the First World War, their Bulgarian allies blew up the base of the monument, and the statue of Mircea the Elder was taken as a war trophy.
