Summary/Abstract: Teaching is the meeting place for students and teachers. The teaching process has its own characteristics that can be based on traditional and contemporary didactic knowledge. Considering the nature of the primary role and the degree of activity of the subjects participating in the teaching process, we can talk about teacher-oriented and student-oriented teaching. Teacher-oriented teaching and student position as a teaching object belong to the discourse of traditional teaching practice, while teaching oriented towards a student, as a subject of the teaching process, is reform commitment of higher education institutions in the European area of higher education. In order to explore the characteristics of the higher education teaching process, 490 students and 80 teachers of the University of Sarajevo were surveyed. Analysis showed interesting results and differences in the responses between students studying in teaching and non-teaching orientations. Conclusions obligate to undertake more reflection on a number of elements and factors in order to make high-quality didactic-methodical decisions for the creation of an effective and quality teaching process. In that process we teach while learning and learn while teaching. Future teachers should be taught about it during initial education and continuous professional trainings.
