Clothing in the Shop Region (Around Sofia) as Shown in the Water Colours of Nikola Arsenović

Summary/Abstract: The investigation makes an attempt to reconstruct the clothing of the Shops (population of the region around Sofia), as shown in the water colours of Nikola Arsenovic, drawn in 1878. Proceeding from the limited information, provided by the visual sources, as well as through the use of fragmented materials, kept in the museum stocks, and the descriptions of the clothing of the population of this region over a longer period of time, it has been possible to follow the modifications of individual parts of the clothing, as well as the whole costume. In this way the model can be fixed as being characterised as the basic one at the start of the 20th century, remaining without any change in the course of many decades.
