STECAK NECROPOLIS IN SNIJEZNICA NEAR TEOCAK - RESEARCH, VALORIZATION AND PROTECTION

Summary/Abstract: In the village of Snijeznica near Teocak, on the site of Stari Mezar, there is a necropolis with 14 recorded stecak tombstones in the shape of a gable and a chest. The necropolis was recorded in more detail in 2017 by the Institute for the Protection and Use of the Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage of Tuzla Canton, during which its disturbed condition was established. Several stecak tombstones were overturned, sunk into the ground or overgrown with moss, which is why the cleaning and protection of this site and its stecaktombstones was imperative. The works on arranging the necropolis officially started in 2021, and the procedure of research, valorization and protection is described in this paper. As a very significant example within the necropolis, there is a stecak with an engraved inscription in Bosnian. This specimen was also the most endangered, as it was built into the fence of today's cemetery. Within the paper, a detailed description and dimensions of the preserved stecak tombstones that are the subject of the work are given, as well as the procedure for their protection.
