Summary/Abstract: The text analyses several phraseological units which originated from Aesopian fables. The mythical figure of their author and the specific characteristics of the fable as a genre in Antiquity are also discussed. Although many phrasemes ascribed to Aesop are widely used in modern languages many of them have a long history, thus linking the European culture with the tradition of Ancient East.
