Summary/Abstract: Sombor Library “Karlo Bijelicki” is one of the oldest libraries of the Serbs, and this year celebrates 160 years of its existence. Most responsible for its establishment in 1859 was the financial officer Кarlo Bijelicki (1813–1878). In the fifties of the 19th century Austrian government has closely followed the work of cultural associations, and the entire cultural and educational life was conditioned by the internal and external politics of Vienna, who sought to subordinate their work to the control of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Bijelicki, a big fan of the book, aware of the fact that people accessible only minimal education, addressed the Vienna Association for the dissemination of books and brochures of popular education, with the aim to establish in Sombor Reading circle, under his auspices. Unhappy with the efforts of the Association to influence and direct the views and concerns of readers, relying on the strength of Sombor municipality, Bijelicki with his friends founded the Association for the establishment of the Municipal Public Library in Sombor. National indifferent and apolitical, a devotee of Enlightenment ideas, at a time when there is an intensive development of civic nationalism and national political parties, Bijelicki achieved his lifelong goal – the establishment of municipal public libraries. In the first years of the library, Karlo Bijelicki as secretary and librarian managed to establish a fund of nearly 23,000 books. Realizing the importance of their work, strictly taking into account his condition and storing, from time to time printed catalogs in which he gave an overview of the donors and donated books, copies of the Statute of the municipal public library, the more important the decision of the General Assembly, list of members of the Board and the state library fund. The work will be going through life and humanistic educational ideas of the founder, to expose the origin and development of Sombor libraries, as well as shed light on the life of a true bibliophile.
