Spatial policy instruments in a large city on the example of Szczecin

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to define what spatial policy instruments are being used in the development of Szczecin city and what urban functions are in the greatest extent supported and expanded by these instruments. An analysis of the subject literature concerning the spatial policy instruments in large cities has been made. In addition, key objectives have been identified arising from the study of conditions and directions of Szczecin spatial planning. Furthermore, for the specific purposes of the article the research material has been collected and prepared using official voivodeship journals of West Pomerania area along with the data available in the Szczecin City Council. The conducted studies show that at the city level it is possible to reduce the number of issued decisions on building conditions and land use at the expense of increasingly developed local plans of spatial arrangement.
