Summary/Abstract: Alfred Marshall (1842-1924) was an outstanding theoretician of economics, and the founder of the Cambridge School of Economics. He has often been presented as the ”father” of neoclassical economics and the most important theorist of regional development. The aim of this paper is to analyze Marshall`s theories, which are key elements for modern theories of regional development. Five topics are discussed in the paper: Marshall’s ideas of industrial district and the theory of external economies, the concept of human capital, the biological analogy and ”life cycle” theory of entrepreneurship, the introduction of a fourth factor of production, organization.
