Summary/Abstract: At the crossroads between the Latin West and the Byzantine East, between paganism and monotheism, Bulgaria transformed itself leaving behind its polytheistic pagan past. But the Christianization of 9th-century medieval Bulgaria under the symbols of the unified Christian faith presupposes and imposes unification through a new legislation and a new state ideology. Customary law is perceived as already an ineffective (and illegitimate pagan) tool for regulating the new socio-cultural realities, and for the needs of the newborn Christian power, ecclesiastical and secular, the reception of some Byzantine legal texts is chosen as a inevitable step towards the new Christian future.Historically Byzantine law inherited ius Romanum under the sign of Christian canons and Christian ethics, and namely in this ideological framework Bulgarian rulers perceived it and used it. The present paper looks for the vectors of this strong ius Romanum – ius Byzantinum – Bulgarian Medieval Law influence in the processes of translation, interpretation, adaptation and compilation of legal norms and principles – a true еmbodiment of a new strategy for government and survival of medieval Bulgaria.
