Summary/Abstract: The laws against luxury (sumptuariae leges) are a unique phenomenon in the legal and cultural history of ancient societies. Their appearance marks the arrival at a limit in their development, from which new desires, claims and needs (related to the changed standard of life and territorial expansions) cease to be incentives for civilizational development and become harbingers of demoralization and spiritual decay. Today, the problems of limiting luxury and extravagance are not subject to legal regulation.
