Summary/Abstract: This material aims to be a rigorous approach, complying with the historical truth and based on archive materials, of the history of the Police of the town of Galati. Without having a linear development, just as the history of the Romanian people, in the history of the Police of Galati, the periods of evolution, stagnation or involution mix together. The factors that influenced such an evolution of this institution were mainly infernal factors: the number of the staff, the moral and professional quality of the staff, the material basis, national events, legislation and the local conditions. The period under debate is comprised between 1903, when the first organic law of the Police, initiated by the Liberal Ministry of Internal Affairs, Vasile Lascăr, became effective and the end of WWI. The article deals with various issues, such as the evolution of the legislation, the attributions of the Prefect and of the Head of the local Police, the organization of the Commissariats, the attributions of the circumscription secretaries, of the police agents and officers, of the city sergeants; it also mentions the major events that marked the development of the Police of Galati and of the town itself. A special attention was paid to the period comprised between 1916 and 1918, the years of WWI, when the situation of the town of Galati was a peculiar one, as a result of its great importance as a major port and as being situated in the proximity of the enemy troops disposed near the Siret and the Danube.
