Summary/Abstract: Valuable achievements of the Ukrainians cultural heritage include the ethnic artistic tradition of folk costume beaded decor, which has already undergone two stages of its development and is currently in the third one. This tradition appeared in Ukraine at the turn of the XVIII–XIX centuries as a cultural transfer of the Romantic Epoch. In the given article, the author presents her vision of the first stage of this tradition, which lasted from the beginning to the end of the XIX century. For this reconstruction, the author uses methods of comparison, review of the literature as well as technological, typological and artistic-stylistic analysis of museum artifacts. It was determined that in the first stage of the tradition, Ukrainian craftsmen used the following techniques in most in their artworks: threading, sewing «v prykrip» (in-sewing) and stringing; at the end of the XIX century, beaded weaving technique also became popular. The beaded decoration was applied in jewelry; different head-wears were also adorned using beads. Geometric shapes motifs dominated in artworks ornamentation. The color range consisted mainly of five to seven colors. The ethnic artistic tradition has already obtained authentic (Ukrainian and local) traits at the initial stage of its development. Knowledge about the achievements of this stage could be of interest to art historians and ethnologists, as well as to modern beaded artworks craftsmen specialized in the art of bead decoration.
