Summary/Abstract: Constantine the Great is the first Christian roman emperor. During his long reign, he influenced almost irreversibly the course of the religious history of the Roman Empire. His most important role in the spread of Christianity was the following: declaring tolerance for Christian religion; favouring Christianity by tax exemption and generous donations; building magnificent churches and establishing Sunday as an obligatory day of rest in the whole empire. The complex personality of the Holy emperor was adorned with eminent moral virtues such as faith, hope, courage, justice, wisdom, peace, love, etc. For his life, dedicated to the service of God and people, the illustrious sovereign Constantine is remembered in the Christian Church as “the Great”, and for his extraordinary evangelical testimony he is considered “equal to the Apostles”. The virtuous emperor tells us, from the realm of eternity: “Be my imitators, even as I imitate Christ” (I Corinthians 11, 1).
