Summary/Abstract: In theoretical debate on social capital there is disagreement about whether trust is an element, source, or effect of social capital. While some authors consider trust as an element, others perceive it as an important source or effect of social capital and reject the treatment of trust as social capital. In order to avoid tautological rea- soning, a definition of social capital has to focus on what social capital is and not on what its effects are. This enables that trust, which is very important for the normal functioning of society, be considered as an effect and not an element of social capital. The aim of this paper is to analyze the complex relationship between trust and social capital.
