The development of self from the preverbal to the verbal environment: implications for the theory of creativity

Summary/Abstract: In expanding the field of shared human experience and enhancing the coordination of human activity, natural language also produces an effect of mutual alienation between abstract categorizing and the emotional and intuitive sphere of human experience. The force of these two parallel consequences grows together with the spatial and temporal enlargement of social systems, which is typical for Modernity. These considerations reveal that the analysis of a wide range of modern social interactions, which can generally be defined as a moderate form of the pathogenic “double bind”, have a potentially crucial role for the theory of human creativity.
