One More Political use of the Zadruga (A Case Study)

Summary/Abstract: This article is a modest contribution to the study of two important issues related to the early construction of a nation in the Balkans: the instrumentalisation of the Zadruga (as a “traditional”, “ancient”, “ethno specific” etc. complex household organization and the formation of assimilatory policies toward Bulgarian Muslims - Pomaks (as a specific “border group”). It illustrates how the linkage between those two categories can be seen as an example of the mechanisms through which both scientists and politicians aim to contribute to the construction of a homogeneous ethno-nation.
