Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on two books from the category of chrildren’s picture literature by the Swedish author Ulf Stark When Dad Showed Me the Universe (2018) and Can You Whistle, Johanna? (2019) (illustrated by Eva Eriksson and Anna Höglund, respectively), available in the Slovak translation. Using an analytical-interpretive method, the author investigates the artistic means by which the Swedish author achieves an authentic aesthetic effect of his texts. The following artistic zones in the author’s strategy were identified: the congeniality of the work’s verbal and visual aspects; confrontation of the conventional (stereotyped) with the innovative and inventive; the use of the principle of paradox, and the principle of reduction that is enriching; the use of comic principle based on subtle humour which is not offensive or ridiculing; and, in the context of reader-receptive aesthetics, artistically convincing use of indeterminacy and the perspective of a reader’s expectation. The paper concludes with a statement that the Slovak translation of Ulf Stark’s work ought to be recognized as a part of the variable element of the golden fund of the world literature for children and youth, and time will only tell if it remains in the club of the best literary works.
