The motif of loss and death in reading-books for primary education

Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the motif of loss and death in the context of children’s reception of literary texts. It specifically characterizes the concept of death and loss and its components. Moreover, it deals with the concept of death and loss of plants, animals and people in literature for children and youth. The paper presents partial research findings of a qualitative content analysis of the literary texts that carry the motif of loss and death. The research was conducted within the author’s doctoral project. The paper draws attention to the need for educating teachers in carrying out research and opening a discussion on this issue.
