Summary/Abstract: The ink landscape painting motif “Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang Rivers” (Trad. Ch. 「瀟湘八景」was created in China in the 11th century on the basis of rich Chinese literary traditions. Very soon it spread to Korea and Japan, leaving a notable impact on the development of poetry and painting there. While enjoying enormous popularity, this topic also underwent local transformations in China and Japan. This article is aimed at tracing the historical cross-cultural relations between China, Japan and Korea through the motif of “Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang Rivers”, and its legacy today.
