Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Japanese architects and designers are among the leaders in their field in the world. In the last decade, a number of Japanese architects have been awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, frequently referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture. In 2010 it was awarded to SANAA, in 2013 to Itō Toyō, and in 2014 to Ban Shigeru, known for his architecture using paper, particularly in the form of cardboard tubes. Before that, the prize was awarded to Tange Kenzō in 1987, to the Metabolist Maki Fumihiko in 1993, and to Andō Tadao in 1995.
