Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to explain the mechanism of implementing sustainable development through the transfer of knowledge during the process of succession, which is crucial in terms of the continuation of family traditions and values. The aim of the article is to present mentoring as a form of organisation of knowledge transfer between the owner of a family business and his successor. The additional aim of the considerations is to draw attention to the impact of intergenerational communication and cooperation in the succession process, the effective implementation which enables long-term functioning of the company on the market. The theoretical considerations presented in the article indicate that mentoring activities undertaken by the nestor support the operation of knowledge transfer and contribute to the effective execution of the succession process. While intergenerational communication and cooperation, which are the essence of mentoring activities, facilitate sharing of knowledge between family members, they also allow for building the vision of a multigenerational family business.
