Summary/Abstract: The Republic of Bulgaria's full EU membership put in focus the theoretical clarification of the equality issue, as well as the modernisation of legislation and its incorporation into the best European anti-discriminative policies. Finding efficient legal and alternative mechanisms for effective enforcement is essential for avoiding mono-discrimination and multiple discrimination as well. Empirical characteristics of the contemporary forms of discrimination are based upon theoretical analysis of the definition of social deviation in legal-sociological doctrine. Legal consciousness is one of the most important factors that plays a significant role in the process of implementation of non-discriminatory laws. The study reports results from representative empirical legal-sociological research into legal consciousness and (non)discriminatory bahaviour in the context of some very specific ethnic differences in Bulgaria. This indicates that public opinion about discrimination can play an important part in the preparation of the new non-discriminatory legislation.
