Summary/Abstract: The animated documentary is a hybrid form. It arises from the synthesis of an auditory plan represented by an authentic, indexical sound, with a conditional, non-indexical animated picture that may contain indexical images, but they are not predominant. The indexical sound connects the animated image to the perceived real world in the animated documentary. It allows the viewer to identify it within the framework of perceptual realism. The article proposes a classification of animated documentary films created on the basis of audio recordings of the conversations and interviews with real people, participants in events, experts, scientists, politicians and show business stars; the principles of creating each of the listed types of films are considered, possible options for correlating the indexical sound and the visual image are analyzed. For the most part, these films represent animation journalism that have become “catalysts” of public opinion, identifying sore points of modern society, introducing topics and problems into public discourse that have not previously been the subject of consideration
