Summary/Abstract: Developing the right type of defence capabilities was a constant theme within the transformation agenda assumed by NATO and EU. From this perspective, the last decades were marked by continuous efforts to find the right formulas for combining the national undertakings with multinational cooperation approaches. Several initiatives were developed, under institutional auspices of NATO and EU, in a short period meant to address the key shortfalls, most of them centred on increasing the cooperative pattern of defence capabilities development. Equally, different functional typologies have been employed aiming at a better capitalization of the national resources in the context of an expanded need for capabilities, which have positive impact on the ability to deploy and protect multinational contingents in various areas of operations. The progresses achieved are steady, especially in consolidating the trend of using the multinational cooperation as the main tool for generating the relevant capabilities. Furthermore, implementation process of different initiatives highlighted the opportunities of generating more specialization roles and responsibilities in capabilities.
