Summary/Abstract: The narrator presents the princess as a “sincere” person, however she hides her feelings from those around her and even from her mother, Mme de Chartres who took care to bring her up according to the social codes of her period. It is through these social codes that we must take into account the notion of sincerity. In this article, which includes the first volume of the novel, the feelings of the princess towards the duke are animated, but also held back by social influence. But it is also through these social ties that she participates in the game. This is why her “sincerity” is considered rather strategic. Settled in an aristocratic environment, does it carry with it the strength to free itself from this social straightjacket ? This work will be studied from a psychosocial approach, a method that analyzes both mental processes and social behavior.
