The Perception of the Other in the Translations of Nurullah Ataç and Cevdet Perin

Summary/Abstract: Language, even though it doesn’t reflect the idea and although the word only helps to transfer the idea and even it falsifies and also it is noted that a complete translation is just an utopian translation is a way which is opened in the confrontation of “self” with the “other”. The merits of translation are to reveal the “other” but the “other” in translations is sometimes marginalized and has been deleted. Whereas the completion of “the other” with “self” is the requirement of being a “human” and a “civilized”. In the 19th century, Friedrich Schleiermacher opens a way through the “other” in the translation theory and he indicates that the translation based on the “other” is an “authentic” translation and later in the 20th century, also Antoine Berman believes that a foreign should remain as foreign within the scope of ethics of translation. Also, Nâzım Hikmet, in the Republican period refers that “the other’s” way of thinking will be able to transferred in the texts of translation. In this context, the effort of the translator in limbo to get “the other’s” way of thinking won in the target language, can be seen as a third process which has been discovered between two resisting worlds or as a common language. This study, regarding the translation as a profession which requires research, study and time and even the slightest mistake of translator is a subject of a criticism, it is accepted that it is not the translator in violent torment who is a traitor but the languages and at the same time in this translation process in which the loss in significance is inevitable because the words live in specific climates, it reveals that the selection of words is essential and when the meaning and the style tries to drink from the same chalice, only the meaning or the style can quench the thirst of the meaning or the style. In this article because of the attitude of Nurullah Ataç and Cevdet Perin to the word of “coincidence” which has been repeated strikingly and to some “cultural” words in the novel, they haven’t reflected the “other” in their translations. Besides, the reasons of this approach are the ideology that the translators have adopted and the style that they have given preference.
