Summary/Abstract: The article describes a mechanism employed in Norwid’s poetry that permits precision and openness in reflecting on his poetry. In order to achieve that, Norwid introduces a double stylistic device which is examined by means of an alternative method of thematic criticism. The first stage of this stylistic device is constituted by a modern allegory which recognises manifestations of the contemporary world; it proves effective due to its two interrelated metonymic levels. However, the entire process of thinking effort that takes place in the poems does not stop within the limits of the contemporary world. The poems develop a symbol on the grounds of this allegory and open Norwid’s poetic thinking to the ‘inexpressible’. This thinking does not bear any theological stamps, it is granted as an absolutely remarkable straightforward experience that is epiphany.
