Sofronie Vraceanski and Dimitrie Cantemir ‒ The beginnings of modern Bulgarian culture and literature

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the contribution of the most remarkable representative of the Bulgarian national revival to the development of the modern Bulgarian language based on his translation of the prestigious work by the Romanian prince Demeter Cantemir Kniga sistima muhamedanskia religii. The author transcribed the original manuscript by Sofronie Vrachanski of the Pogodin Collection in the National Russian Library of St. Peterburg (former Saltykov-Shchedrin Library). The patriotic motivation of the translation and the relation between the Bulgarian version and the original are discussed. The study emphasizes the importance of Sofronie’s translation for both the establishment of the modern Bulgarian language and the cultural and literary relations between Bulgaria and Romania.
