Summary/Abstract: The world is transforming from a unipolar to a multipolar global order, under which the structure of the international system must be adapted in accordance with the interests and ambitions of the main actors. The European Union and Russia are competing for influence in the European security space. Russia seeks to return to the world stage with the methods of geopolitics and the demonstration of military force. The United States are focused on the Middle East and East Asia, with some analysts saying that Europe ranks only third in importance to American interests. Although not a direct player in the structure of European security, China seeks to become an indispensable factor in international relations through global economic influence, which will have serious consequences for the global balance of power. In many parts of the world, democracy is in retreat, and countries with autocratic regimes are enjoying increasing international influence and power.
