Summary/Abstract: The article considers one of the most frequently cited works of French sociology and social policy. Robert Castel addresses problems concerning social integrity and analyses the various processes that pose a threat to it. He studies the development of social questions from their prehistorical context under the conditions that prevailed in pre-modern society to their current form. He introduces the terms “deconversion“ and “negative individualism“ or “the individual from scarcity“ in this overall context, which have been widely discussed and adopted by many researchers. His work provides a reminder that economic growth and organisational innovation do not in themselves guarantee social integrity; on the contrary, they may introduce new threats to it.
