Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development has been imposed by the need to solve the multiple global problems of humanity, through a rational consumption of resources, by avoiding pollution and profound imbalances in ecosystems that coexist on a global scale. Consequently, the process of sustainable development aims at both social and ecological economic activity. Given that agriculture is an important economic subsystem of the national economy, the sustainable development of rural areas and agriculture has become an essential component of the sustainable development of the national economy. Through its content, rural development expresses a three-dimensional relationship of economic, social and ecological nature. The article analyzes the development opportunities, financing opportunities, administrative changes and development possibilities of non-agricultural activities in rural areas in Romania, in order to achieve the sustainable development objectives assumed by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
