Summary/Abstract: The author presents the life and activity of Prof. Dr. Doc. Pandele Olteanu (1908-1995), a pioneer and promoter of Slovak studies in Romania (he was a professor, a scientist and an organizer). Founder of the Slovak studies at Bucharest University, holding a PhD. Diploma in Romanic and Slavic philology, issued by Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius) University in Bratislava, member of various scientific societies and associations, laureate of numerous prizes, Professor Pandele Olteanu (born on the 5th of September 1908 in Bascov, county of Argeş) graduated from the Faculty of Arts in Bucharest, being awarded “Magna cum laude” (1934). Later on he worked as a high-school teacher of Romanian in Bucharest and Iaşi (1935- 1942), and in 1942 he passed the exam and became a professor of Romanian language at Comenius University in Bratislava (1942–1945; 1946–1949). Pandele Olteanu had just started his career as a university professor. He got his PhD. in Slavic and Romanic philology in Bratislava in 1945 and, together with a group of members of the Society for Romanian-Czechoslovak Cultural and Economic Relationships, he edited the “Românoslavica” magazine. Professor Olteanu came back to Romania for good in 1949, and he succeeded in introducing the Slovak language and literature as major subject studies at the Faculty of Arts of Bucharest University. That was a crucial moment in the development of Slovak studies in Romania, as well as the improvement of Romanian-Slovak cultural relationships. After having been recognized as a Doctor Docent in philology, professor Olteanu worked as an assistant professor (1949-1962), associate professor (1962-1967) and senior professor at Bucharest University. In 1968 he would lead the PhD. trainees’ activity related to Lingvistica slavă (Slavic Linguistics), and one year later he was appointed head of the joint department of Slovak, Czech and Ukrainian language and literature. Hardly had he gotten retired (1973) when he was appointed Emeritus Professor and re-confirmed in February 1991. He passed away in Bucharest on the 18th of December 1995, and he was inhumated at Domneşti on the 20th of December. Professor Olteanu brought his contribution to the organization of the young department of Slavic languages in general and Slovak language in particular, to the training of teachers-to-be, he drew up textbooks (he was the exclusive author of the chapter on syntax and the coordinator of the first Romanian university textbook of Old Slavic and Romanian Slavonic Language, 1975), he also contributed to the promotion of Slavic studies in Romania as a discipline that is absolutely necessary for the Romanian language, history and culture. During his career as a university professor, he held various courses and seminars; he was also responsible of the pedagogical practical training of the students in the Slovak and Romanian department that took place at Nadlac High-School, county of Arad. Besides his organizing and didactic-methodological activity, Pandele Olteanu carried out a rich scientific and research activity in various philological and linguistic fields (Slavic studies, Old Slavic language, Slovak studies, Bohemia studies, Slavic-Romanian relationship, Romanian Slavonic language and old Romanian literature) he brought his great contribution to, he was present and well-known in the Romanian scientific world, as well as abroad, he drew up numerous Slavic-Romanian philological and linguistic monographs (The Language of Slavic Tales on Vlad Ţepeş, for which he was awarded the second prize by the Ministry of Education, Fiore di Virtù) etc.
