Summary/Abstract: The derivational process played an essential role in the diversification of the Serbian inventory of personal names. In Serbian language there are two means of creating given masculine names: derivation – from a root or formant and composition – from two roots/formants without any suffixes. This article analyses several issues regarding the structure of the masculine derivatives and treats a series of simple and compound, productive and less productive suffixes that lead to the formation of masculine names in the Serbian language. After establishing the denominator subject and/or the root of the anthroponym, we will identify the suffixes used to form the masculine given names in Serbs in the Danube Gorge. Regarding the anthroponyms, in our paper we will consider only the criterion of direct etymology, regardless if the formant is the root of a common word, a whole common word or another anthroponym. The process of formation of proper names by means of suffixation is different of the derivational process for common words because the anthroponymic suffixes in Serbian language lack any semantic meaning, their only role is to give birth to new person names with different format, but equal in meaning. Therefore the meaning of a proper name is given by the root from which it is formed and not from the suffixes which are only some grammatical means for creating new words.
