Summary/Abstract: Yang Guifei (719 – 756) was the beloved concubine of Emperor XuanZong (685 – 762) of the Tang Dynasty, the ex-wife of one of his sons and one of the four most beautiful women in Chinese history. The emperor’s ardent and fateful love for her marked the beginning of the crisis and decline of the Tang Dynasty. Emperor Xuen Zong’s passion for the beautiful Yang Guifei led him to ruin and abdication, and the entire Tang Empire to inevitable disintegration. The concubine Guifei was as charming as she was cunning and extravagant, but later centuries have forgotten her vices and left us with only a classic story of pure love. The love story between Emperor Xuen Zong and his beloved concubine remains in Chinese history as one of the most exciting dramas, marked by political intrigue and fateful coups.
