Summary/Abstract: The author looks into the question of the new organization of prisons in Bulgaria as a necessary condition for the modernization of the newly liberated Bulgarian State. Detailed acquaintance with the different systems of imprisonment in the advanced countries made possible the drafting and passing of a law and regulations for the prisons. Several new prisons were built, and most of the old were reconstructed so as to meet the new requirements. Within a few decades Bulgaria made a step forward as regards prison organization. The lack of sufficient funds was one of the most modernization of this institution but conditions were for the future establishment of a stream-lined organization comparable with the advanced countries.
