Summary/Abstract: The task which the young Bulgarian Principality faced after the liberation from Turkish slavery was to put the organization of the State on European foundations. The author tries to show the building of the state institutions. It was only natural that the Bulgarians turned first to the experience of the West European countries. The successful choice of European experience in the field of finances administration and the application of foreign models proved decisive. In about one decade and a half the foundations of the new financial and taxation system were successfully laid in the young Bulgarian State. The passing of appropriate legislation allowed the setting up of institutions that guaranteed a normal budget. A National Bank and credit and insurance companies were opened, and they contributed to the economic stability notwithstanding the turbulent political situation. The pragmatism of the Bulgarian statesmen and the good choice of West European models made it possible to organize a good financial system in the Principality. Thus Bulgaria met the 20th century as a first-rate economic power in the Balkans.
