The Problem of Semantic Adequacy in Translating Wolfram’s Parzival

Summary/Abstract: Translating is building of bridges between two cultures, the way to make them familiar with each other, to overcome the strangeness between them, yet not betraying any of them. Therefore the eternal problem of translation is achieving the balance between faithfulness to the original on the one hand and freedom in the language of translation on the other hand. Translating is more difficult if the difference between the source and target culture is larger, that is, if members of two cultures do not perceive and experience the reality in the same way and therefore denote it differently. In those cases, there are often no appropriate equivalents in the target language, so it is more difficult to find adequate solutions during the process of translation. The aim of this paper is to point at the specific problem of semantic adequacy which appears in translating the mediaeval German literature in modern German and Serbian language, as well as at the possibilities of solving that problem.
