Conceptual Representations of Meteorological Phenomena in the Spanish and Romanian Phraseology: the Wind

Summary/Abstract: Our contrastive study aims to analyse the semantic representations of the meteorological phenomena in the Spanish and Romanian phraseology and focuses on the phraseological units that include the words Sp. viento/ Rom. vânt in their structure. The semantic analysis has revealed that the concept ‘wind’ generates a variety of metaphorical images in common language, both in Spanish and Romanian, based on the prototypical properties of this meteorological phenomenon: place/ direction, speed, instability, circumstance, destiny, event, difficulty, futility of an action, failure, lack/ absence, desire/ love etc. Many conceptualisations come from the language of navigation, especially in Spanish, and most phraseological units are colloquial. This conceptual recurrence demonstrates the systematic and cross-linguistic (universal) character of some metaphorical interpretations that are given to physical (meteorological) phenomena.
