Keywords: literary translator; culture; ideology;
Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the literary translator, seen not as somebody who merely renders the meaning of the source text in another language but rather as a person who intervenes in the text in order to make it acceptable to the target culture. Thus, the literary translator is almost writer-like and needs certain qualities and knowledge that are dealt with as well. Reference is also made to the role literary translation plays in the imposition of a certain manner of writing or of a certain ideology and to the literary translator’s (in)visibility.
