Summary/Abstract: Political leaders are an increasingly influential factor in the elections of contemporary democracies. This increase in the electoral importance of leaders is usually attributed to the changing patterns in media coverage of politics in the age of television. This paper explores the impact of leader evaluations on vote choice in post-communist Romania for nine years (1995- 2003). It finds coherent evidence of a moderate level of personalisation in the Romanian politics, that tends to increase during pre-election periods. It also identifies a general decline in the popular confidence in political leaders and a strong need for "new faces" in Romanian politics.
